Post-Operative Instructions for Implant Patients

  • HEMORRHAGE CONTROL:
    • No rinsing for the first 24 hours
    • Sleep with head elevated 30 degrees (2-3 pillows) for the first 2 nights after surgery
    • Bruising may occur on the outside of the face near area of surgery. This is not unusual and will resolve within several days
    • Sutures (stitches) are used to close the surgical wound, and will either dissolve on their own within 7-14 days or will be removed at your scheduled post-operative appointment

 

  • PAIN AND INFECTION CONTROL:
    • There may be a slight elevation of temperature for 24-48 hours. If temperature continues, notify our office
    • Use medication as directed on the bottle
    • If you develop hives/rash, discontinue all medications and immediately contact our office
    • If nausea should occur, a carbonated, non-alcoholic drink warmed to room temperature should be taken every hour for 5-6 hours. Follow with mild tea or clear soup. If nausea continues, call our office

 

  • SWELLING CONTROL:
    • Apply an ice pack to jaw at the area of surgery immediately upon returning home
    • Alternate on/off area every 30 minutes for remainder of day
    • Do not apply heat to the surgical area
    • Some swelling is normal and may last up to 7 days

 

  • DIET:
    • No hot liquids for the first 24 hours
    • Avoid inadvertent chewing, clenching or grinding to the surgery area until the final prosthesis is placed
    • Partial/Denture is to be left out at night and be worn only for aesthetics after instructed by your surgeon

 

  • ORAL HYGIENE:
    • The day after surgery, start warm salt water rinses after every meal
    • Use any StellaLife products as directed on the product packaging
    • The corners of your mouth are stretched during surgery. Your lips should be kept moist with either lip balm or Vaseline

 

  • AVOID SMOKING:
    • Smoking is strongly discouraged and may jeopardize the short and long-term result of you implants

 

  • SEDATION:
    • Patients who have been sedated have slower reflexes for a period of 21-24 hours. They may not drive a car or operate machinery. They should not be left alone for this period of time
    • Avoid any quick changes in position, which can cause fainting
